All patients must bring their blood forms to have their bloods taken. If you have lost or misplaced your form, please contact the clinic you are under to request a new one, as we are unable to print them in the Phlebotomy clinics. If you attend without your forms, you may be turned away.

Phlebotomy clinics are available at Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

What to expect

When attending the Royal Liverpool University Hospital for your blood test, you will be given a numbered ticket upon check-in. When your number is called, you will be taken to the clinic for your test. Waiting times will vary as this is a walk-in service.

If your bloods are to be taken at a specific time, please ensure you arrive in plenty of time as you may still be required to wait.

At Broadgreen Hospital you will take a ticket from the dispenser and wait for your number to be called. Again, waiting times will vary as this is a walk-in service.

When having your bloods done at Aintree University Hospital you can present at any three of the Hospital clinics or alternatively book an appointment at the Drive through service.

Please ensure you bring your blood labels/requests with you as it may not be possible to take your bloods without them.

We do not do routine GP blood tests.

Aintree University Hospital

Patients can be referred for blood tests from their Hospital consultant or clinician. Sometimes your blood forms will be sent out to you and you can if you have access to a car, make an appointment for the drive through phlebotomy service.

Stool and urine specimens can also be dropped off at the drive through.

Broadgreen Hospital

We do not process any GP requests at the Broadgreen clinic.

If you are a GP patient requiring a blood test, please visit the Blood Testing Service provided by Mersey Care or call 0151 285 4548 to make an appointment.

Royal Liverpool University Hospital

We do not process GP patients unless the following tests have been requested:

  • Any tests required to be put in ice (e.g., ACTH, Gut Hormones, Lactate)
  • Cryo container requests
  • Lupus
  • Thrombophilia
  • C-Peptide
  • Insulin
  • Factor II, IX, V, VIII Screen, VIIIC, X, XI, XII
  • Day specific fertility screening
  • Colorectal patients under two-week rule (this must be identified on their request forms).

We operate a drive through blood sample service at our Aintree University Hospital. The drive through is located at the Lower Lane entrance to the hospital site, not far from Woodlands Hospice.

Using our drive through service keeps you as safe as possible, and avoids you needing to attend a hospital to have your blood taken.

This page gives you all the information you need to use the service, and lets you book your appointment online. Patients who cannot book online via Simply Book, please call 0151 529 4559.

Please note during adverse weather conditions, you may be asked to step inside the cabins to have your blood taken.

Booking details

The Simply Book website shows slots, which are offered from 8.30am-4pm, for the next two months.

When you select a slot, you will be asked to provide your:

  • Name
  • Email
  • Mobile phone number and
  • Date of birth.

You will receive a confirmation email once you have booked your slot via your mobile or email address.

What do I need to bring with me?

  • Your blood form was included with the patient letter about your appointment – please bring this with you, as we cannot take your blood without this form, and you will have to get another appointment.
  • A face mask/covering (although we can provide one for you on arrival).

Q&As

Can I drive myself? You can either drive yourself, or have someone else drive you.

What do I do when I get to the site? Stewards will guide you at the site and show you where to park.

How will my blood be taken? You will be asked to lower your window and put your arm out for our phlebotomists to take your blood. For infection prevention reasons, you should not open your car door, or get out of your car, unless a member of staff instructs you to do so.

What if I feel unwell? If you feel unwell at any point then simply let our staff know. There are designated areas to park if you need some time to recover.

What if I have other questions? If you have any other questions then please ask a member of the nursing staff or security on site and they will be happy to help.

If you have been advised to fast for your blood test, please fast for a minimum of 12 hours prior to having your bloods taken. This means you cannot have anything to eat or drink (except for plain water) 12 hours prior to the bloods being taken. Once your bloods have been taken, you can eat and drink as normal.

You will not be able to access your own blood results. The only people who can access your results, are the doctor or nurse who requested them.

The department does not hold blood results. Please contact your GP or the department you were referred from.

If you require a domiciliary nurse to visit you at home to have your bloods taken because you are housebound, please contact your GP to arrange this visit. Domiciliary visits for blood tests cannot be arranged through this department.
