Nuclear Medicine uses small amounts of radioactive tracer substances to look at how certain parts of the body are working. Radioactive emissions from the radiotracer are detected by a special camera or imaging device. These radioactive tracers can also be used for therapeutic purposes.
Our team aims to provide a high-quality imaging and therapy service to the people of Liverpool and the surrounding areas. Our specialist services also attract referrals from Cheshire and Merseyside and further afield. The Nuclear Medicine Unit comprises several specialties.
- Nuclear Imaging Services including Nuclear Cardiology, bone and kidney scans and non-imaging blood tests
- Therapies (Thyroid Investigation and treatment and also Neuroendocrine and Prostate Therapy)
- PET CT
- Bone Densitometry.
Services are provided at both the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and Aintree University Hospital and are available through a health professional referral only.
The Nuclear Medicine team is multidisciplinary consisting of:
- Nuclear medicine consultants
- Nuclear medicine specialist registrars
- Radiographers and technicians
- Nuclear medicine specialist nurses
- Neuroendocrine and thyroid specialist nurses
- Physicists.
Our PET CT scanner is located at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and provides more complex scans for cardiac, neurology, infection and oncology.
As well as performing diagnostic scans we provide a well-established therapeutic service using radioactive substances. These can be administered orally or by injection.
