Haematology Liverpool provide specialist care for patients with thrombosis (blood clots and clotting disorders) in Liverpool and the wider North West.
We treat conditions including:
- Venous thrombosis such as deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) and blood clots in other sites (such as in abdominal veins or venous sinuses within the brain)
- Inherited thrombophilia conditions
- Antiphospholipid syndrome.
We provide consultant led specialist clinics for all these patient groups, and in addition other specialist clinics led by our senior nursing team and specialist pharmacists for patient groups including:
- Follow-up venous thrombosis clinics
- Low molecular weight heparin monitoring clinics
- Cancer associated thrombosis clinics.
We also see patients with newly diagnosed blood clots soon after diagnosis in our ambulatory unit, and care for patients with complex blood clotting issues as inpatients on the Haematology ward (Ward 8B).

Referrals from Primary Care
Referrals from colleagues in primary care must be sent through the Haematology Referral Assessment Service (RAS) available on the NHS E-Referrals System. Referrals will be triaged by a clinical member of the team and allocated to an appropriate clinic. If you require this service, you will be contacted with an offer of an appointment following this.
In some circumstances, we will contact you to have further investigations (such as blood tests) following the referral. In these circumstances you may be discharged with advice or may be booked into a clinic for review.
Referrals from other Specialists
Referrals are received by letter from colleagues within the Trust or other providers (for example other Haematology Teams). These referrals are reviewed by a clinician before allocating to the most appropriate clinic and you are offered an appointment.
