About our service
Our team provide an advisory and limited treatment service to patients who are referred by a Dentist/General Dental Practitioners (GDP) for restorative dental treatment. Treatment is limited to specific complex conditions including those requiring working with other specialties. This may include routine fillings, root canals, crowns, and bridges.
As a University Teaching Hospital, we accept a limited number of patients for undergraduate, postgraduate, hospital staff and specialist training.
Treatments may be carried out by supervised qualified dentists, staff members or students in training meeting their teaching needs.
Our team can provide a diagnostic and treatment planning service for a wide range of developmental disorders and acquired diseases affecting the mouth, face and jaws.
What to expect
Whilst waiting for a consultation you should continue to attend your own Dentist/General Dental Practitioner for preventative care and advice and routine/emergency dental treatment.
Please be aware you may be eligible for consultation, but this does not guarantee that you will be accepted for treatment.
If you are not accepted for treatment a treatment plan will be shared with your own dentist and the patient will also receive a copy.
Patients who are having difficulty accessing or finding an NHS dentist primary dental care should visit NHS find a dentist rather than the Dental Hospital.
Restorative treatment would not be provided under sedation or general anaesthesia.
Only certain priority groups such as post-cancer rehabilitation, severe developmental hypodontia and severe maxillofacial trauma, may be considered for implants by the NHS at the Dental Hospital.
More information
NHS referrals via published proforma
NHS referrals into the service can be made by a General Dental Practitioner. We do not accept referrals via your doctor.
The referral will be reviewed by a consultant in the department and if accepted an appointment will be sent out. X-rays may be required to diagnose your condition and to develop a treatment plan.
Useful documentation
Be seen by our students
As we are a university dental hospital, we have both undergraduate and post graduate dental students who can provide restorative dental procedures, under supervision.
There are periods within the year, and around academic calendars whereby we have limited appointments. During term-time there is more availability and flexibility for appointments and treatment.
If treatment or patient needs are complex or requires shared speciality care it may be carried out by a specialist or consultant on the department. Other treatments may be carried out by junior staff members or students in training meeting their teaching needs.
Self-referral for undergraduate treatment can be accessed here.
