Aintree University Hospital, located in Fazakerley, is the single receiving site for adult major trauma patients in Cheshire and Merseyside.
Its £35 million Urgent Care and Trauma Centre, which contains the hospital’s Emergency Department, Major Trauma, Critical Care services and Frailty Assessment Unit, was formally opened by the Duke of Cambridge in 2017. The site also includes a helipad which gives seriously injured patients arriving by air ambulance rapid access to care.
The hospital also hosts several regional services, including Gastroenterology, Diabetes, Palliative Care, Ear, Nose & Throat, Maxillofacial, Urology, Vascular, Respiratory and Rheumatology, including a Behçet’s Syndrome Centres of Excellence, one of only three in the country.
As part of work to further develop urgent and emergency care, a £22.5 million investment programme is underway to improve access to services and patient experience. This includes a newly opened Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU), which is part of the new North Mersey Stroke Service.
The hospital’s 10-storey tower block, which houses the majority of Aintree’s wards, underwent a £15 million refurbishment that started in 2020 and is expected to extend its lifespan by 30 years.
The hospital shares a site with The Walton Centre, which specialists in neurology and neurosurgery, as well as the Clatterbridge Cancer Centre – Aintree.
