Pre-operative assessment

You’ll have a short pre-operative assessment before surgery to ensure that you’re well enough to undergo the treatment and to learn more about your medical history.

A specialist nurse will arrange any tests that you need before surgery, give you information about preparing for surgery and describe what will happen on the day of your surgery and through your recovery period.

On the day of your surgery

All patients are asked to attend the day ward at 7.30am. The day ward is located on the 2nd floor of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital.

The reception staff will check your details and a nurse will take you for assessment. You’ll then be taken to a waiting room and then to theatre.

We ask that family and friends leave the patient they are accompanying at reception, unless the patient needs extra support and nursing staff have agreed otherwise.

We’ll call your family/friends when you’re ready to leave after your surgery. We advise that you should have someone to take you home and that you avoid bringing anything of value into the hospital.

Staying overnight

If you have been told you will need to stay in hospital overnight following your surgery, then you should bring an overnight bag. Your family will be given a number to contact the ward.
