The Prosthetics and Wheelchair Centre Psychology is a specialist service based at Aintree University Hospital. The service is for anyone under the care of the Prosthetics and Wheelchair Centre (PAWC) who might be experiencing distress in relation to their amputation and rehabilitation or difficulties in coping with the impact of limb loss.

It is natural that losing a limb can trigger strong emotional reactions, both at the time, or later in the rehabilitation journey.

We specialise in helping people to cope following amputation and the emotional stresses and strains with which they may be struggling.

The kind of problems we might help with include:

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Changes in body image
  • Pain management
  • Making sense of your current experiences
  • Considering the impact of your amputation on yourself and those around you
  • Getting the best from rehabilitation.

More information

We can accept referrals from colleagues within the Prosthetics and Wheelchair Centre at Aintree University Hospital.

We accept referrals via ICE, clinical letter or paper referral form.

All referrals are subject to an opt-in process, where patients will be contacted prior to being offered an appointment.

Waiting times vary, however, generally all patients will be offered an appointment within four weeks of referral. Face-to-face, telephone and video appointments are offered.

If you are unsure whether our service is the most appropriate one for your patient, or are concerned about a patient’s psychological health, but they do not wish to be referred to us, please contact us for advice.
