Aintree University Hospital's Urology Team have featured in a BBC North West Tonight series exploring the rising trend in ketamine use and highlighting the great work the team is doing for patients who are experiencing lasting side effects from taking the drug over a period of time.
The team established a dedicated Ketamine Clinic to help patients across Cheshire and Merseyside who have been referred by their GP with urological side effects that have been caused by Ketamine use. Chronic usage affects the lining of the bladder, and can shrink it, leading to frequency in needing to urinate, infections, bleeding, blockages and incontinence.
Urology Consultant, Miss Emma Fishleigh, who appears in the report said: “The use of ketamine is skyrocketing in the North West, in particularly in Liverpool. It’s often difficult to engage with patients to get them into clinic but we do as much as we can to benefit them in the long run when we do see them.”
